The Heart Series: A Territory to Discover
An evolving exploration of the heart as a territory shaped by our roots, memories, identity, wounds, and capacity to heal, connect, and belong.
-
Where memory, ancestry, and the experiences that shaped us continue to live.
-
Where the heart finds the courage to speak, express, and reveal its truth.
-
Where heritage, memory, and personal experience come together to reveal who we are.
-
Where wounds become wisdom, and the heart learns to grow again.
-
Where the heart finds connection, community, and a place to belong.

THE JOURNEY
A Search That Led Me to the Heart
For more than two decades, my work has been a search.
A search for belonging, identity, memory, connection, and the meaning of the experiences we carry within us.
Eventually, I realized that all of these paths were leading me to the same place:
the heart.
The Heart Series is my exploration of that territory.
THE JOURNEY TO THE HEART
More than two decades of art, identity, and belonging.
From floating trees and handprints to flags, faces, fingerprints, and finally the anatomical heart, discover the journey that gradually became The Heart Series.
FIVE TERRITORIES. ONE HUMAN JOURNEY.
Roots. Voice. Identity. Healing. Belonging.
The Heart Series moves through five interconnected territories—each revealing another part of what we carry, who we are, how we heal, and where we belong.
THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY
Where Art Connects People and Creates Impact.
Through The Gil Project, The Heart of Our Community brings together local businesses, art, and people with a shared purpose: giving back.
Each participating business receives a unique heart created by Edwin Gil, reflecting its identity and connection to our community. Through the Community Hearts initiative, 50% of artwork sales support a nonprofit selected by each business.
Together, we transform art into meaningful community impact.
Different Businesses. One Community. One Heart.
THE FIVE TERRITORIES
ROOTS
Where memory begins.
VOICE
Where the heart finds expression.
IDENTITY
Where we discover who we are.
HEALING
Where wounds become wisdom.
BELONGING
Where connection becomes home.
TAKE A PIECE OF THE JOURNEY WITH YOU
Upcoming Experiences
This Hispanic Heritage Month, I invite you to experience a special edition of The Heart Series a journey through the colors, stories, cultures, and extraordinary artistic legacy of Latin America.
I created 15 original anatomical hearts, each inspired by the visual language and legacy of an artist connected to Latin America from Frida Kahlo and Fernando Botero to Wifredo Lam, Olga de Amaral, GuayasamĂn, Tarsila do Amaral, Ana Mendieta, and more.
These 15 artists cannot represent the entirety of Latin American art. Instead, they are 15 doors into a much larger territory one shaped by Indigenous, African, European, Caribbean, immigrant, ancestral, and contemporary voices.
And at the center of every piece remains the heart.
Because beyond our different countries, histories, languages, and generations, our heritage lives in the heart.

THE HEART SERIES
The Heart Is a Territory to Discover
An Art Exhibition by Edwin Gil
You Are Invited to the Opening Celebration
Join Colombian-American artist Edwin Gil for a special presentation of The Heart Series at the McColl Center in Charlotte, as part of the Centennial Celebration + Fall Patron Party.
The Heart Series is an artistic exploration of identity, belonging, memory, and healing. Through anatomical hearts, layered textures, and golden lines inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, Edwin invites us to reflect on the experiences that shape who we are.
Each heart tells a story. Each layer holds a memory. And every golden line reminds us that our imperfections and experiences are part of what makes us whole.
More than an exhibition, The Heart Series is an invitation to look inward, celebrate our shared humanity, and discover the territories within our own hearts.
