It is Gil’s interpretation of the historical significance of the McCrorey Heights and Oaklawn Park communities and their relationship with the school.
“Oaklawn Language Academy has served as a magnet school option for McCrorey Heights and Oaklawn Park, as well as a community meeting place and a resource for families,” says Carmen Concepcion, Principal, Oaklawn Language Academy. “We are excited that this beautification project has built upon the strong community relations that have been a hallmark of this area. This mural will stand as a beautiful testament to that history.”
“I am thrilled to be a part of such a meaningful project,” says artist Edwin Gil. “This neighborhood has such a rich and interesting history and I am honored to be able to tell its story through art. It is my hope that future generations will be able to look at this mural and have an appreciation and understanding for the neighborhoods’ past and vibrant future.”
“This project has created tremendous grassroots connections throughout the community,” says Beth Poovey, Senior Associate, LandDesign. “It has been wonderful to see so many different people and organizations work together to improve the neighborhood and make this mural a standing testament of the strength and resilience of these communities.”

About Edwin Gil: Born December 11, 1971 in Itagui, Colombia, Edwin Gil is a contemporary conceptual artist best known for his vibrant colors and proprietary paint technique used to achieve depth and movement in his works. Gil combines his post-graduate studies in Psychology, as well as knowledge gained by working with great Colombian artistic masters like Hector Favio Castaño and Jorge Botero Lujan, to find meaning in the ordinary. In doing so, he has developed three fundamentals for painting – for fun, for love, for life – that can be seen throughout his work. After moving to the U.S. in 2000 and a short stint in Miami, Gil established himself in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he became the principal focus of Hispanic art.
